History: Werner Forssmann


1928 - Graduated from Medical School
1929 - First year resident, 25 yrs old. Auguste-Viktoria Hospital, Eberswalde (small town nearby Berlin). - Performed a self-experiment, with the help of a co-worker (Peter Romeis).
Punctured left cubital vein. Inserted a well-lubricated 4 Charrieres-thick ureteral catheter. Inserted 35 cm. Peter Romeis broke the experiment.
1 week later - Forsmann did it on his own. This time 65 cm. With catheter in place, walked from operating room downstairs to X-ray room. Took Xrays while moving catheter with the help of a nurse. Nurse held a mirror for Forssman. Entered RA. But, could not reach RV due to short length.
1956: Nobel Prize with Cournand and Richards.
